TELUK INTAN, May 30 ― DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang called today for a parliamentary select committee (PSC) to investigate the RM32 million Bank Rakyat scandal involving controversial businessman Deepak Jaikishan.

“Have a PSC on the RM32 million scandal in Bank Rakyat on whether Hasan Malek had abused his powers,” Lim told a press conference at the DAP’s operations centre here today.

“Open up Bank Rakyat’s books,” added the Gelang Patah MP.

Lim was referring to The Malaysian Insider report that alleged that Bank Rakyat had given carpet dealer Deepak an interest-free RM32 million loan that could be paid off through post-dated cheques for the next 10 years.

Former Bank Rakyat chairman Tan Sri Sabbaruddin Chik reportedly said that his tenure as chairman of the bank was not extended after he and the bank’s board of directors turned down Deepak’s proposed repayment method.

Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek, however, was reported by news portal as saying yesterday that “everything was done above board”.

Bank Rakyat is under Hasan’s ministry.
