Rohingya man fined RM10,000 for attempting to bribe cop

KOTA BAHARU, May 25 — A Rohingya man was sentenced to a day's jail and fined RM10,000, in default two months' jail, by the Sessions Court here today for attempting to bribe a policeman.

Judge Adli Abd Ghalib handed down the sentence on Mostafa Kamal, 28, who pleaded guilty to the charge.

Mostafa was charged with offering RM300 to Detective Sergeant Zahari Daud as an inducement to not question him in a case involving alleged human trafficking.

He was charged with committing the offence at the police contingent headquarters here at 10.45 am last May 19.

The offence, under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act, carries a jail sentence of up to 20 years and five times the amount of bribery offered, if found guilty.

Deputy public prosecutor from MACC, Shahidah Muslimah Roslan, prosecuted, while Mostafa was unrepresented. — Bernama
