TELUK INTAN, May 25 - Barisan Nasional (BN) was not behind the smear campaign against DAP’s Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud in the Teluk Intan by-election, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today.

The deputy prime minister and deputy BN chairman said that the ruling coalition does not use such “dirty tactics”.

“I want to promote my candidate; I have a respectable, clean and experienced candidate,” Muhyiddin told reporters at the ground-breaking ceremony of the West Coast Expressway project here today.

Posters bearing the image of the DAP candidate for Teluk Intan, Dyana Sofya alongside a bikini-clad actress — with whom she shares a striking facial resemblance — were disseminated last Friday at predominantly Malay residential areas in Changkat Jong.

The A4-sized posters did not bear any party emblem.

DAP’s Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari said yesterday that his party was not fingering anyone, but called on BN to jointly condemn the smear campaign.

He added that some posters were even found in a mosque.

Muhyiddin also said today that BN is the underdog in the by-election.

“We have to work till the very last day to get votes,” he said.

Dyana Sofya, 26, will take on Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong, 53, in a straight fight for the Teluk Intan federal seat in Perak, with polling day set on May 31.
