TELUK INTAN, May 24 — Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein called today for an investigation on Umno Youth’s alleged threat to burn down the DAP headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
Hishammuddin was asked today if it was okay for Umno Youth to make such a threat against the opposition party.
“No, I don’t think it’s proper, and I’d advise them to investigate,” Hishammuddin told reporters at Kampung Padang Tembak here.
“A collision in the middle of the South China Sea caused riots in Vietnam, so basically, the maturity of our leadership in the past, which goes beyond race, religion and position, differentiates us from situations like what we see in Hanoi, what we see in Bangkok, where 28 people have already died before the army has taken over,” he added.
Last Thursday, a group of about 50 members from the Kuala Lumpur chapter of Umno Youth reportedly demonstrated in front of the DAP headquarters in the national capital over remarks made by DAP’s Seri Delima representative, RSN Rayer, in Penang.
When debating the Penang Governor’s speech on Tuesday, Rayer uttered the words “celaka Umno” (damn Umno), triggering outrage among Barisan Nasional (BN) lawmakers who are the opposition in the northern state.
On Wednesday, some Umno members trespassed into the Penang state assembly while it was in session, demanding an apology from Rayer but were left frustrated.
During last Thursday's protest in Kuala Lumpur, the group of 50 allegedly threatened to burn down the DAP headquarters and reportedly vandalised property belonging to the opposition party.
Hishammuddin called today for a thorough investigation to find out who had instigated the incident.
“If emotions can't be controlled, street protests can make things worse,” he said.
