GEORGE TOWN, May 21 — It is not right for former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to attack DAP’s Teluk Intan candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud’s upbringing, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said today
The Penang lawmaker said Yammy Samat, the mother of DAP’s Teluk Intan candidate is now being attacked for being proud of her daughter.
“I’m surprised that the mother is also attacked for being proud of her daughter and it is not right for Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to say that she had failed to raise her well,” he said.
Dr Mahathir had reportedly expressed his disappointment that Dyana Sofya had come from a family of Umno supporters, saying that Umno members should educate their children on the party’s history and contributions.
Yammy had defended herself and her daughter’s candidacy yesterday, saying that Dyana “is very much like Dr Mahathir’s own daughter Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir”.
Lim said there is nothing wrong with Yammy being proud of her daughter.
“Don’t use politics to try to separate the bond between mother and daughter,” he said at a press conference this morning.
He lamented that for three consecutive days, Dyana’s character has been repeatedly attacked.
He demanded that Barisan Nasional (BN) and the pro-BN media be more humane by stopping its relentless personal attacks against Dyana and Yammy.
“Win with honour and not by smearing the candidate and her family with such dirty tactics,” he said.
Lim claimed their political opponents are now using the social media to attack Yammy.
“Even if you want to win, do it with dignity and not in this way,” he said.
He said DAP will be able to hold its head up proudly, win or lose, as it will fight clean and fair.
After Dyana was named as DAP’s candidate last Saturday, she has been subjected to criticism and personal attacks with Umno leaders like former minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil and Penang Opposition leader calling her a “traitor”.
