GEORGE TOWN, May 21 — Penang Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang urged the police today to set up a security outpost at the gates of the state’s legislative assembly building, after a group of Umno men stormed in this morning and caused a ruckus.

Law also called on the police to conduct an investigation into the incident, which he described as “unprecedented”, saying it has tarnished the sanctity of the august House.

“I would like to strongly condemn and express my disappointment with the breaking and entering into the state assembly by several troublemakers earlier today.

“This incident is unprecedented and has never before occurred in the history of this state,” he said in a brief statement here.

Law said there are more civilised ways for a person to voice his or her disgruntlement on any issue and the act of violently breaking into the state assembly should be deemed a crime.

At around 2pm this afternoon, a group of Umno members began gathering outside the Penang assembly building in George Town before violently breaching the gates to storm into the main hall.

They were demanding to see Seri Delima state assemblyman RSN Rayer to extract an apology from the lawmaker who had allegedly uttered the words “Umno celaka” (Umno be damned) yesterday.

Rayer, who had yesterday had called for the resignation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak for his failure to find missing Malaysia Airline flight MH370, was not on the scene.

Security guards scrambled to get the intruders to leave the hall but they left only after being persuaded to do so by officials.

The group of about 20 then took their demonstration to an area just outside the gates of the state assembly, demanding that Rayer come out and apologise.

Jelutong Umno Youth chief Jasmin Nordin demanded that Rayer apologise and withdraw the statement in person.

“We do not want to disturb anyone else, all we want is Rayer to come out and apologise,” he said.

Among those who managed to slip past the guards was Penang Perkasa Youth chief Mohd Rizuad Mohd Azudin who had also demanded that Rayer apologise.

The small group disrupted proceedings in the assembly when they marched in demanding that Rayer come out and apologise.

Yesterday, while debating the Penang Governor’s speech, Rayer had said “celaka, celaka, celaka Umno”.
