KUALA LUMPUR, May 20 ― Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chair Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed today needled critics of previous scrutiny on Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad (MAHB) over the construction of KLIA2, after safety concerns re-emerged less than a month after the terminal’s opening.
Depressions were reportedly forming at aircraft parking bays of the newly-opened low-cost carrier terminal, which houses several low-cost budget carriers including AirAsia, and is collecting water due to the torrential downpour in its two weeks of operations.
Nur Jazlan pointed out today that “many quarters” were upset with the PAC when it hauled up MAHB over KLIA2 and accused the committee of meddling in its affairs.
“Now we see sinking. Where? At the aircraft parking bays? What do they have to say?” he asked at a press conference in Parliament today.
PAC had previously took note of ongoing works by MAHB to rectify ground subsidence at the curtain runway outside the aircraft parking bays.
The committee had also raise concerns over water accumulation or “ponding” next to the aircraft parking bays.
“Barely three weeks since it started, there are already all these problems,” lamented the Pulai MP.
“This is why we call MAHB to explain the problems earlier on, but MAHB said it was AirAsia that is causing the delays, but AirAsia didn’t build the airport,” said Nur Jazlan, referring to the carrier’s hesitance to move into KLIA2 as scheduled by MAHB on May 2.
AirAsia, which is KLIA2’s largest tenant, had expressed its reservations on the new terminal’s safety and security prior to reluctantly moving in on May 9.
The no-frills airline’s cited the airport’s price tag of RM3.9 billion, which is double the original estimate, and repeated construction delays as reasons for concern.
MAHB has previously acknowledged that KLIA2 is located on unstable ground that may settle, and that the facility could require years of resulting upkeep.
“But there is no point crying over spilt milk now. It is up to the Ministry of Transport and MAHB to resolve this,” Nur Jazlan said.
