KUCHING, May 19 — Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Datuk Sri Peter Chin has said that Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem will not accept the newly formed Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras) into Barisan Nasional.

He said the statement by Adenan recently, saying that he welcomed Teras and its support to BN, did not mean that Teras has become a BN member.

“No, Adenan never said he accepts Teras into BN. Of course he acknowledges that this group from Teras wanted to pay a courtesy call on him to express their support for him, and for BN there is nothing wrong in that.

“From my understanding of Adenan, he just acknowledged that Teras supports BN. But he has never said that he has accepted Teras to join BN,” Chin told reporters after chairing a central working committee meeting at the party’s headquarters yesterday.

After the meeting, leaders from 18 southern region party branches were briefed on current issues party’s including Teras.

On Friday, leaders from Teras namely former Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) president Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom and former SUPP Sibu branch chairman Datuk Sri Wong Soon Koh paid a courtesy call on Adenan.

At a press conference later, Adenan said Teras had assured him that its members would continue to remain with BN.

“I’m grateful for this clarification so that there will be no doubt raised over this matter. We welcome them (Teras) and their support, and will make the necessary arrangement when the need arises,” said Adenan.

Chin said he met Adenan in Miri on Saturday and was assured that Teras was not accepted as part of  BN.

Chin refused to give further details of his talks with Adenan.

Chin was also confident other BN component parties will also reject Teras.

“If you go by the constitution of BN, there must be a unanimous agreement. If no unanimous consent [sic] from every BN party, you cannot become a BN member. We are confident that that (Teras becoming a BN component) will not come about,” he added.
