KUALA TERENGGANU, May 14 — There will be no reshuffle within the Terengganu state executive council for the time being, newly-appointed mentri besar Datuk Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman said today, as Barisan Nasional (BN) continues to ward off a potential disaster in the state leadership.

“No, not for now,” he told reporters here when asked whether he would make changes to the current line-up of state executive councillors.

The second-term state lawmaker was sworn in as mentri besar two days ago, amid a short-lived crisis that saw BN lose its majority in the state assembly for several hours yesterday. As it stands today, however, the ruling pact has the same number of seats as Pakatan Rakyat (PR) in the 32-seat Terengganu assembly.

Earlier, Ahmad Razif had also dismissed talks that the state assembly would be dissolved, saying that he has not formally received or accepted the resignation letters supposedly submitted by several Umno state lawmakers.

Ahmad Razif said as far as he was concerned, this means that Datuk Ahmad Said, Ghazali Taib and Roslee Daud — the three lawmakers who said they quit their parties on Monday and yesterday — are still with Umno.

Bukit Besi assemblyman Roslee “verbally” retracted his resignation from Umno yesterday, while rumours have been swirling that the other two assemblymen Ahmad and Ghazali, the representatives for Kijal and Ajil, are also having second thoughts about leaving Umno.

With Roslee back in BN, the latest score has the ruling coalition tied with the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) opposition at 15 seats each.

Ahmad and Ghazali, who have refrained from announcing their allegiance to either bloc since they went rogue yesterday, are considered independent representatives in the Terengganu state legislative assembly.

Ahmad, 57, threw in his resignation letter dated May 12, 2014 to the Umno secretary-general, scant hours after he was forced to step down as Terengganu mentri besar mid-term, and replaced with Ahmad Razif.

Ghazali had quit together with Ahmad on Monday night while Roslee reportedly handed in his letter yesterday morning.

Ahmad, who was reappointed Terengganu mentri besar for a second term on May 9 last year, was forced to step down from office mid-term, reportedly due to the BN’s weakest polls performance in a decade.

The embattled lawmaker claimed he had asked PM Najib to allow him to step down as mentri besar after his daughter’s wedding reception on May 17 but the Umno president reportedly disregarded the request as a “personal matter”, prompting Ahmad to quit the party.
