KUCHING, May 9 — The head of the Sarawak Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club has called the state DAP chief racist for demanding a RM50 million allocation for Chinese schools.
Abdullah Saidol, chairman of the Sarawak Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club told reporters that the Chinese in Sarawak have prospered at the expense of the state’s Bumiputeras and they land they owned.
“The land being developed (in Sarawak) is basically owned by the bumiputeras
“If you look around in the urban areas like Kuching, Bintulu, Miri and Sibu, which are predominantly Chinese, they are developed from the resources of the bumiputera land,” he told reporters after the state assembly here today.
He was responding to Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen’s request that the state government allocate RM 50 million a year for Chinese schools in Sarawak.
Abdullah said according to figures he obtained from the Education Department, Chinese vernacular schools in Sarawak has been allocated about of RM133 million since 2011, or about RM44 million per year.
He was also responding to a call made by Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong for a more inclusive civil service.
Abdullah said that Bumiputeras in the state had not complained about the Mandarin language requirements preferred in the private sector jobs.
“Therefore I cannot comprehend their (DAP) demands. It is never enough. They (DAP) just want to be seen as champions or fighters for the Chinese community,” he added.
