KUALA LUMPUR, April 25 — Urine tests for drugs on bus drivers will be conducted randomly, Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi said.
He said the tests would carried out by the Road Transport Department (RTD) and the National Anti-Drugs Agency (Nada), and they would not subject the drivers to daily tests.
“It will be random and the drivers must always be prepared for the test,” he said.
A total of 71 bus drivers had undergone the test by RTD and Nada after the operation kicked off at Pudu Sentral Terminal, South Integrated Terminal, Genting Highlands Bus Terminal and Putra Bus Terminal on Wednesday, according to Bernama. None of the drivers tested positive for drugs.
Besides drug testing, the ministry had banned double-decker buses on six hilly routes from May 1 and made it mandatory for buses to be fitted with seatbelts.
The design and construction of buses must also comply with UN regulations.
RTD Federal Territory assistant enforcement director Shahrul Azhar said the operation was conducted during peak hours, before the buses departed.
“We will issue a summon to bus operators should they be found to have no second driver or drivers are not fit to drive,” he said.
