SEPANG, April 11 — Customs have made their biggest seizure yet of drugs, valued at RM12.7 million, at the KL International Airport (KLIA).
The 66.57kg of methamphetamine were seized on Monday at a godown of Malaysia Airlines Kargo or MASkargo at the airport, KLIA Customs director Datuk Chik Omar Chik Lim said today.
He said the drugs were brought in from Lagos, Nigeria, on Saturday.
“The drugs had been placed in 11 black handcarry bags wrapped in 67 small packets,” he told a press conference at his office here.
He said an investigation revealed that the drugs had been declared as hair attachments imported by an unregistered company with an address in Klang, Selangor, but the mobile telephone number found on the air waybill could not be reached.
Chik Omar said KLIA Customs were working with the Nigerian Customs to trace the individual who sent the consignment.
“The modus operandi is to wait for a call from MAS Kargo to collect the goods but, as it was discovered by Customs, nobody turned up,” he said.
Meanwhile, on the same day, at 12.55pm, Customs confiscated 1,645 packets of cigarettes worth RM1,809 on which duty amounting to RM6,580 had not been paid, at the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT).
The cigarettes were smuggled in by three Cambodians, two of them women, aged between 24 and 54.
They were charged in court and each was fined RM18,090 and sentenced to one month’s jail. — Bernama
