Claiming slander, ‘raja bomoh’ mulls RM100m lawsuit against Khairy, Jakim

KUALA LUMPUR, March 19 — Ibrahim Mat Zin, who shot to fame with his airport antics over the missing flight MH370, said today he might haul Minister Khairy Jamaluddin and the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) for undermining his reputation as a “bomoh”.

Ibrahim, a self-styled “raja bomoh” or the king of shamans, wants Khairy and Jakim to retract their statements labelling his work as “illegal”, failing which he said he might file a RM100 defamation suit against them.

“Rather than going to the public, Khairy should have come and discussed with me. I would have told him my side of the story and cleared my name again.

“I’m here to help the country not tarnish the country’s reputation,” Ibrahim was quoted by The Star daily on its website today.

"I’ve been doing this for many years, how can they say whatever I do is ‘haram’ and ‘syirik’, it’s not right at all!" said Ibrahim, who took his detractors to task for undermining his 50 years of experience as a bomoh.

Ibrahim was briefly cast into the spotlight when he was recorded performing a supernatural ritual he believes will help an international search-and-rescue operation for the missing Malaysia Airlines jetliner at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) last week.

Within minutes, videos of the spectacle went viral on social media sites.

Ibrahim claimed the jet carrying 227 passengers and 12 aircrew had travelled into the spiritual realm inhabited by supernatural beings.

Khairy, who is youth and sports minister, had ridiculed Ibrahim’s performance and urged the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) to crack down on the bomoh.

Despite the backlash, Ibrahim has reportedly maintained that those aboard MH370 are still alive and are being held hostage in a supernatural realm or have crash-landed in three unidentified islands.
