GEORGE TOWN, March 6 — Penang Opposition Leader Datuk Jahara Hamid today suggested Pakatan Rakyat (PR) had engineered an incident in which an egg was mashed into the hand of Seputeh MP Teresa Kok at a ceramah in Permatang Pauh last night.
But Jahara also said Kok should expect such repercussions for stirring up a controversy with her Chinese New Year video lampooning current events that was put online last month.
“How do we know they did not do it themselves to get publicity? It could be their own people,” she said when asked to comment on the incident at a press conference today.
“When you stir up people’s emotions like this, you could expect backlash from the people,” she said.
The Teluk Ayer Tawar state assemblyman was commenting on last night’s incident when a man had walked up to Kok on the pretext of shaking her hands before crushing a raw egg in her extended hand.
Kok had just finished delivering a 30 minute speech at the ceramah to explain the context of her controversial “Onederful Malaysia” Chinese New Year video clip when the man approached in a friendly manner.
Kok has been embroiled in controversy after her satirical Chinese language video was accused of insulting the Malays, the Muslims and the country’s armed forces.
The DAP vice-chairman continues to be criticised over the allegations despite repeated denials that the video had touched on the three subjects.
Last month, a coalition of Muslim non-governmental organisations in Kuala Lumpur offered a RM1,200 reward to anyone who recorded themselves slapping her for allegedly insulting the Malays and Islam.
On February 19, red paint was splashed at her service centre in Kuala Lumpur and a dead chicken was left on the doorstep of the premises.
Today, Jahara also accused Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng of hypocrisy in labelling those who had attacked Kok as “bullying a lady” when he had targeted her.
“He can say ‘you all are bullying a lady’ in Kok’s case but then, he can bully me in state assembly, trying to stop me from talking and raising issues in the state assembly,” she said.
Lim had labelled her as a “racist grandmother” following an exchange at last state legislative assembly sitting in December, which he later partially rescinded.
