KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28 — Police will step up their game plan to counter the rising gun violence by gangsters in northern states.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said there were several groups of gangsters that seem to be taking advantage of the situation, assuming Ops Cantas was no longer in force.
“We are monitoring these gangsters closely and we have a game plan to bring them down,” said Khalid.
Meanwhile, he confirmed “several” police officers — including a senior police officer who was transferred to Bukit Aman recently — were being investigated for money laundering and bribery.
“However, a recent report that highlighted 60 police officers were being investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is inaccurate.
“I met MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamad on Wednesday and he confirmed the report, published by an online new portal, was false. I have no idea where the figure came from.”
On a separate note, police were in the midst of preparing for the arrival of Philippines President Benigno Aquino.
Aquino, who will arrive in Kuala Lumpur today for a two-day visit, is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Among the issues that will be discussed will be the ongoing threats of another Sulu invasion and the recent kidnapping of a Taiwanese tourist from Sabah.
