KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28 — Muslim activist group Ikatan Muslim Malaysia (Isma) said today it will submit a petition of one million anti-Comango signatures to Putrajaya next week, hoping to pressure the government into taking immediate action against the human rights coalition.

In a statement here, the group said the signatures and a report will be handed over to Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Hamzah Zainudin in Wisma Putra, Putrajaya next Monday morning.

Isma claimed it had collected the one million signatures from Malaysians through its online petition, as well as physically, as part of its campaign “Sejuta Ummah Tolak Comango” (One Million Muslims Against Comango).

The group also said it plans to provide Hamzah with articles and photos that would allegedly prove the need to reject and take firm action against the Coalition of Malaysian NGOs in the Universal Periodic Review Process (Comango).

Isma deputy president Tuan Haji Aminuddin Yahaya reportedly described the signatures and report as alleged proof that the majority of Malaysians here were against Comango’s demands.

“We will submit it to the government and this is also a signal to United Nations member countries to reject their (Comango) demands,” he was quoted as saying in the statement on Isma’s website.

Isma also claimed that “hundreds” of ceramahs to inform the public of the alleged “danger” of Comango have been held nationwide since last November, with such speeches under the “Kempen Selamatkan Ummah” (Campaign to Save Muslims) also conducted in several public institutions of higher education.

ISMA has been at the forefront of attempts to discredit Comango, which has also come under fire from other Muslim activists here who claim the group’s human rights recommendations to the United Nations ran counter to the “true” teachings of Islam and the sovereignty of the Federal Constitution.

Comango countered that their report was merely an effort to encourage Malaysia to prove its commitment towards improving the lot of all Malaysians via the Universal Periodic Review (UPR).
