SHAH ALAM, Feb 17 — Faced with an uncertain future as Selangor mentri besar, Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said he is seriously contemplating casting his hat in the ring for a national leadership position at PKR’s party polls in May.

He told The Malay Mail Online in a recent exclusive interview that he had been approached by party members, but will only make a decision next month, just before the nomination date for all top PKR posts on March 29.

“If I say anything more it will create unnecessary speculation. I will have to assess to see whether I have ground base support or not,” he said.

The Port Klang assemblyman also kept his cards close to his chest and declined to say which PKR post he may contest.

Khalid believes he will be able to use his experience as Selangor MB to improve the party's performance in terms of organisational and financial management.

“I can add value to that,” said Khalid, who was Selangor PKR chairman before being succeeded by PKR deputy president Azmin Ali.

However, the second-term mentri besar’s tendency to unilaterally make decisions in administering the country’s wealthiest state has stirred some dissatisfaction among Pakatan Rakyat leaders, especially PKR leaders in Selangor.

Khalid's rivalry with Azmin for control of Selangor has been chronicled in local news reports, and is expected to manifest during the party’s upcoming elections.

The nomination date for all top PKR posts will be on March 29, while nominations for divisional posts will be from April 4 to April 13.

Voting will begin on April 25 and end on May 11, and the results will be announced either on May 12 or May 13.

PKR recently amended its election rules to ensure a clean and healthy polls this May.

Under the new rules, individuals can now nominate themselves, instead of relying on proposals from the divisions.

The duration for the voting process will also be shorter than previously.
