SINGAPORE, Feb 13 — Malaysian Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said today the time was right for Malaysia and Singapore to enhance security and defence ties.

He described the ties between the two neighbouring countries as being at an all-time high, but in specific sectors.

“These are neutral sectors such as education and economic. I think we should expand it further on the security and defence sides. I think the time is right as the political will is there and the focus of the world on our region gives us a window to explore it,” he told reporters here.

Earlier, Hishammuddin attended a ceremony in honour of fallen World War II hero Lt Adnan Saidi and his team from the Malay Regiment who were killed in a battle defending Singapore against a Japanese invasion 71 years ago.

Also present was Malaysia’s High Commissioner to Singapore Datuk Husni Zai Yaacob.

Hishammuddin, who is also acting transport minister, is on a four-day visit to the republic to attend the Singapore Airshow at the invitation of his Singaporean counterpart, Defence Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen.

“It is very important that Malaysia and Singapore navigate the waters very carefully. Economically, I think our relations and co-operation are very good.

“Now, we have to translate in the other sectors, namely defence and security and how things are unfolding in our region, and sharing of information is important,” he said. — Bernama
