KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22 — The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has set a two-year period, beginning today, to demolish the remaining five blocks of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Flats, better known as Pekeliling Flats in Jalan Tun Razak here.

In 2005, four blocks of the building were demolished. 

Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib (picture) said the move to demolish the remaining five blocks was to expedite a redevelopment project in the area to cover mixed development, including residential and business blocks.

“The process of demolishing the flats will be via a crane and machinery, beginning from the upper part of the building as opposed to the explosion method as there will be minimal effects,” he told reporters here today.

In 1969, the Pekeliling Flats were occupied after it was built under the First Malaysia Plan — after the Razak Mansion Public Housing in Sungai Besi — for the lower income group. — Bernama
