PETALING JAYA, Dec 31 — It has been an interesting year in social media for Malaysia. From quotes and tweets gone viral to bizarre music videos, here’s a recap of the most epic moments of 2013.

Sharifah Zohra Jabeen’s “listen, listen, listen” rant 

Malaysians were told very clearly at the start of the year to “listen, listen, listen”. And Sharifah Zohra Jabeen, who made that remark in a condescending tirade against a university student, has since inspired remixes, memes and even slogan T-shirts. Needless to say, she turned into an Internet sensation overnight.

MCA’s Love is in the Air karaoke video

At the height of campaigning for the general elections, Malaysians got to see just how “cool” our politicians are. At the top of the “cool” pile was MCA’s cover of John Paul Young’s 1978 hit Love Is In The Air. Meant to be a campaign clip, the video went viral on YouTube for all the wrong reasons. It was mocked by many on Twitter and Facebook, and even managed to make an appearance on an Australian talk show. The music video, which featured MCA Federal Territory’s 1Malaysia Task Force Team members, including Bukit Bintang candidate Frankie Gan Joon Zin, Bandar Tun Razak candidate Tan Kok Eng, Seputeh candidate Nicole Wong Siaw Ting and Cheras candidate Teoh Chee Hooi, was possibly one of the most cringe-worthy moments in politics this year.

MIC’s Beribu-ribu Tahniah

Unlike MCA’s video, MIC’s Beribu-ribu Tahniah actually featured someone from the entertainment industry, with well-known Indian personality Dheephan Chakkravarthy belting out praises for the party and Barisan Nasional. MIC later denied paying for the song, saying it was solely the initiative of Chakkravarthy.

Malindo Air’s Twitter account gets hacked

In October, Malindo Air underwent one of the worst social media disasters in history. Their Twitter account @Malindo_Air was hacked by an unidentified person, who took the liberty of posting a number of insulting tweets from the account. The airline reclaimed the account within 24 hours of the initial postings, tweeted an apology and deleted the offensive tweets. However, the alleged hacker somehow managed to hack into the account again and has been freely posting tweets since then. Some of these tweets included: “Dear passengers, smoking is not allowed on board our flights. Monkeys too. Unicorn is okay” and “Share with your OD experience. Mine was a petai filled fart in mid-air. Should have opened the window instead.”
