KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 24 — Following the indiscriminate dumping of waste along the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) last Friday, Kuala Lumpur City Hall together with Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) and Alam Flora Sdn Bhd have taken immediate steps to rectify the problem.
He hopes the new contractor will have adequate experience in waste disposal management.
“We wanted to send solid waste from the city to the plant in Semenyih temporarily but they were unable to handle the huge capacity of waste their maximum intake is only 700 tonnes per day. All waste is now sent to Bukit Tagar,” he said.
Ahmad Phesal said City Hall, SWMD and Alam Flora will reschedule the waste collection time to ensure smooth operations of waste disposal at Bukit Tagar in Hulu Selangor.
The mayor expects the Taman Beringin transfer station in Kepong to be up and running by Dec 31 after repair works were carried out.
He explained the transfer of waste will be completed in three phases if the repair works are completed in time. (see box)
He said City Hall and SWMD will continue to monitor illegal dumping in the city.
“We have caught one contractor disposing construction waste in Sri Petaling yesterday,” said Ahmad Phesal.
A contractor caught disposing waste illegally would be charged under Section 71 of the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 and could face a fine not more than RM100,000 or six months’ imprisonment.
Ahmad Phesal said they were also looking at ways to recycle solid waste in the future.
