GEORGE TOWN, Dec 16 — Two women, suspected of abducting and selling a seven-month-old baby girl in Air Itam here last Thursday, have been remanded for four days, beginning today, to facilitate police investigations.

Penang CID deputy chief ACP Mohd Nasir Salleh said the suspects, aged 37 and 43, were being investigated under Section 14 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act 2007.

Upon conviction, the act provides for a maximum jail sentence of 20 years and fine.

“Based on public information, the two women were nabbed at 4.15pm yesterday, at the Butterworth bus terminal, upon arrival on an express bus from Kuala Lumpur,” he told reporters here today.

Initial investigations have revealed that one of the women had three criminal records for theft.

Meanwhile, Mohd Nasir said the baby girl, Nur Fairuz Izz Zahra Md Faizal, was still warded at a hospital for fever. Her condition was reported to be stable.

He said a man who was alleged to have bought the baby for RM3,500 from the women was released on police bail last Friday.

Last Thursday, the women had allegedly abducted the baby at 3pm, after visiting her grandmother in Air Itam, on the pretext of taking the baby out to play.

A day after the incident, the police rescued the baby who was sold to a man in his 60’s in Balik Pulau. — Bernama
