As weather clears, flood evacuees return home

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 11 — The clear weather in Terengganu and Pahang today has enabled many flood evacuees at several relief centres in the two states to be allowed to return home.

In Terengganu, the number of evacuees taking shelter at 64 relief centres across the state this afternoon had declined to 13,237 (3,081 families) from 15,677 (3,733 families) reported in the morning, according to the National Security Council’s portal.

The number of flood victims in Dungun had also declined to 2,108 people (532 families) from 3,288 people (807 families) earlier today.

In Hulu Terengganu, only 94 evacuees (26 families) still remained at the relief centres this afternoon from 1,351 people (384 families) reported this morning, while in Setiu, the number also declined to 12 people (three families) compared to 134 people (46 families).

However, the number of victims at the relief centre in Marang had risen to 125 (27 families) from only 42 (10 families).

Also risen was the number of victims at the relief centre in Kemaman, that is to 10,898 people (2,493 families) from 10,862 people (2,486 families) previously.

In Pahang, the number of flood evacuees recorded in the state this afternoon had also declined to 5,577 from 5,754 this morning.

According to Pahang police contingent flood operations room spokesman, as at 4pm, 1,387 families were still taking shelter at 76 relief centres in six flood-hit districts.

“The relief centre in Lipis, which housed 16 evacuees, has been closed at noon, while three other relief centres in Jerantut have also been closed at 2pm after all evacuees returned to their respective homes,” he told Bernama.

Pekan still has the highest number of flood evacuees with 3,241 people at 37 relief centres, followed by Kuantan (924 evacuees at six centres), Maran (670 evacuees at 13 centres), Temerloh (404 evacuees at 11 centres), Bera (305 evacuees at seven centres) and Rompin (33 evacuees at two centres). — Bernama
