KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 8 — Terengganu saw a further increase in the number of flood evacuees, from 22,391 this morning to 23,102 people this afternoon, while there was a slight improvement in the situation in Pahang, Kelantan and Johor.
The number of flood victims in Pahang dropped from 40,819 this morning to 40,399 people this afternoon.
Kelantan still has 512 flood victims at shelters in Pasir Mas and Tumpat as compared to 552 people this morning.
In Johor, 1,024 people were still at 13 relief centres this afternoon as compared to 1,340 people at 20 relief centres this morning.
In Terengganu, according to the National Security Council (MKN) portal, there were more evacuees in the Kemaman district, rising to 19,287 people (4,723 families) who are being sheltered at 46 relief centres, compared to 18,576 people this morning (4,177 families).
However, in Dungun, 25 of the 34 flood relief centres in operation there have been closed, enabling 1,858 victims to return to their homes.
According to Dungun district officer Mohd Akil Mat, as of 4pm, only 2,984 victims still remained at nine relief centres.
This morning the 34 relief centres were sheltering 3,764 victims from 936 families.
As for Marang, Kuala Terengganu and Hulu Terengganu, the three districts only have one relief centre still in operation each.
Meanwhile, the state Drainage Irrigation Department (DID) reported that the water levels at the all major rivers in Terengganu were now below the danger mark.
In Kuantan, a spokesman at the flood operations room at the Pahang police headquarters said as of 4pm, 11,872 families remained at 149 flood relief centres in the nine districts that had been hit by floods in the state, compared to 162 relief centres in the morning.
“Kuantan still has the highest number of evacuees at 34,090 people who are being sheltered in 42 relief centres,” he told Bernama.
In Pekan, 3,385 victims still remain at 31 relief centres, Temerloh (1,007 victims in 22 relief centres), Maran (921 in 19 centres), Jerantut (505 in 11 centres), Raub (213 in 10 centres), Bera (193 in seven centres), Lipis (49 in four centres) and Rompin (36 in three centres).
Meanwhile, on the motorways in Pahang, it was reported that only Km16 Jalan Temerloh-Bera was closed to all traffic as the stretch was inundated by a metre of water.
In Johor Baharu, a spokesman at the Johor police headquarters flood operations room said 414 people from 110 families were still sheltered at three relief centres in Pontian; 489 people from 122 families were in seven relief centres in Segamat while 121 people from 42 families were at three shelters in Batu Pahat.
In Nusajaya, Johor State Secretary Datuk Obet Tawil told reporters that the state government would do a post-mortem on the floods that hit the state to assess damages as well as find better ways to manage future flood disasters.
In Kota Baharu, according to the Kelantan state government’s official website, in the Pasir Mas district, 507 victims were still being sheltered at four relief centres in Rantau Panjang while in the Tumpat district, a family of five were still at a shelter in Pengkalan Kubor.
The Sungai Golok water level at Rantau Panjang, however, was still reported to be above the danger level. The level was at 9.28 metres (danger level 9 metres).
