KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 6 — The Home Ministry is to propose the insertion of the words ‘Sunnah wal Jamaah’ in the Federal Constitution to specify the definition of Islam as the religion of the federation.

Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the proposal would be brought to the government for discussion so as to prevent other ideologies, including the Syiah, from spreading in the country.

It is to ensure that the official religion is based on the Sunnah wal Jamaah so as to prevent other ideologies from spreading in the country, he said when asked to comment on a suggestion by Umno Youth vice-head Khairul Azwan Harun for Islam to be defined as such for believers of Sunnah wal Jamaah, at the Umno Youth general assembly on Wednesday.

Ahmad Zahid (picture) spoke to reporters after launching two books written by Datin Seri Shuryani Datuk Shuaib, wife of Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, titled “Je T’aime” and “The Glory of God”, here.

He said the insertion of the words would ensure that believers of Islam who subscribe to other ideologies are prohibited from spreading their teachings in the country. — Bernama
