KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 18 — Putrajaya has been negligent in enforcing its policies, especially those dealing with immigration and employment, which has resulted in three recent deaths from shootings, DAP’s Parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang said today.
The veteran opposition lawmaker said the three who died in separate incidents recently, were victims of Putrajaya’s “negligence” stemming from its leaders’ “greed” for power and position.
“All the crime victims are innocent sacrifices due to the negligence and greed of concerned parties in chasing power and positions, that it neglects integrity, its responsibility towards the country and the huge dream of the Malaysian people,” Lim said in his speech while debating Budget 2014 in the Dewan Rakyat.
The Gelang Patah MP cited the murder of Arab-Malaysian Bank (Ambank) clerk Norazita Abu Talib, who was shot point-blank in the face by the company’s hired security guard in a botched robbery at its Subang Jaya branch, as an example.
He commended the police for capturing the suspect but said the case exposed weaknesses in Malaysia’s immigration system, which enabled the man to gain lawful employment by falsifying his identity.
“How did this person obtain the MyKad, and even if the MyKad is fake, how was he able to open a bank account, receive his monthly salary, in fact given a firearm licence by the Home Ministry?” Lim asked, referring to the mandatory identity card issued to all citizens.
He added: “Did this person also vote in the 13th general election? Is it because the owner of the security company is a crony of the ruling party that the ministry is closing one eye?”
The Ambank murder was followed last week by the fatal shooting of a senior Pahang Islamic enforcer, spurring public fears over gun-related crimes in the country in the wake of the high-profile assassination of Ambank founder Hussain Ahmad Najadi earlier this year.
Just a week ago, Pahang Islamic Religious Department chief Mohd Raffli Abdul Malik was shot three times in front of his house.
The shooting came just after Putrajaya boasted of its purported success in curbing violent and organised crime under “Ops Cantas”.
