JOHOR BARU, Nov 15 — An assistant investigating officer with the rank of sergeant with the South Johor Baru police headquarters was found guilty of three bribery charges under Section 16(a)(B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, by the Sessions Court here today.

K Krishna Malay, 49, was sentenced to a total of nine years and fined RM32,500 or 18 months jail in default for soliciting bribes amounting to RM4,000 at the Sentral Police Station, Jalan Meldrum on August 17, 2012.

Judge Mohamad Haidar Abdul Aziz held that the prosecution had proved a prima facie case against the accused and ordered the sentences to run concurrently.

Mohamad Haidar set bail at RM10,000 and allowed a stay of execution pending a High Court appeal.

Krishna was accused of soliciting the bribes from R Murali and his stepmother A. Pushpa at three separate times on the day as an inducement to resolve a theft case in which Murali was a suspect.

The prosecution was conducted by MACC prosecuting officer Ridzuan Abd Malik while the accused was represented by lawyer G K Sritharan.

In a separate case in the same court, a Singaporean taxi driver was jailed one day and fined RM10,000 after he pleaded guilty to offering a RM50 bribe to an officer from the Public Land Transport Commission (SPAD).

Ng Geok Hock, 55, committed the offence at the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex here on October 25 as an inducement not to issue a summons to him for being in the wrong lane.
