Fake cop detained in Malacca for extortion

MALACCA, Nov 8 — Malacca police have detained a man impersonating a policeman and extorting RM10,000 from a farmer at the canteen of the Ayer Keroh Court, last Wednesday.

Malacca CID Chief, ACP Raja Shahrom Raja Abdullah said the 36-year-old victim became acquainted with the man at the court on September 11 and claimed that he could settle the drug case involving the victim.

He said the 34-year-old man concerned claimed that he purportedly knew a senior police officer and the deputy public prosecutor at the court.

“The suspect initially demanded RM500 from the victim as first payment and withheld the victim’s ATM card before asking the victim to deposit money into his account in stages up to RM10,000,” he said in a statement, here today.

He said the victim later realised that he had been cheated and extorted when he found that his case had not been settled, and he subsequently lodged a police report.

He said the suspect was now being remanded for four days beginning Wednesday to assist investigation under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion. — Bernama
