Report on Genting bus tragedy ready, says deputy minister

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 — The report on the Genting Highlands bus tragedy has been completed, The Star Online reported today.

The news portal said that Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abd Aziz Kaprawi confirmed that the report would be submitted to a special independent committee chaired by Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye by next week.

The committee is tasked with compiling reports of accidents following investigations carried out by various agencies such as the Road Transport Department, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety and police.

Once the committee has examined it, the report will be handed over to Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and then tabled in Cabinet, he added.

Abd Aziz declined to reveal details of the report, but said speeding, road conditions and the guard railing on the road were among the factors cited in it.

The accident which occurred on August 21 saw a bus with 53 passengers plunge into a 60m ravine near Genting Highlands in Pahang. Thirty-seven passengers were killed and another 16 injured in the incident.
