YAN, Oct 30 — The government is in the process of upgrading the telecommunication facility from 2G to 3G in stages in the whole Sungai Limau constituency.
“Only some locations have 3G facility. To provide services using fibre optics will take time to install the connections to the houses. We want to solve the wireless problem first.
“Although initially, the focus was on more densely populated areas, in the end we also cover the sparsely populated ones. In the meantime, we have 17 wireless villages as the hotspots,” he told a news conference at the Sungai Limau state seat by-election Media Centre of the ministry, here, today. He said the wireless village facility and PI1M enabled students and members of the public to access the Internet to send emails and obtain information.
“These are still temporary facilities. Eventually, they will become like the public phone booths; you see them now and then no more. Such a change will happen within a short time,” he said.
Ahmad Shabery said in the 2014 Budget announced recently, a sum of RM6 billion was allocated for providing telecommunication facilities in towns, outskirts of towns and the rural areas.
“These include building 1,000 telecommunication towers so that the 3G and 4G services can be expanded in the rural areas until the Internet becomes a common thing. At that time, we don’t need to have wireless villages and PI1M anymore.” Meanwhile, he hoped that the media covering the Sungai Limau state seat by-election would provide accurate information speedily to avoid people listening to rumours.
Earlier, Ahmad Shabery visited the needy in Kampung Gelam, here, and handed out aid to them.
He also visited the PI1M, here, besides going from house to house, and having breakfast and interacting with some local residents at Warung Pak Su in Kampung Bukit Besar.—Bernama
