KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 — The prime minister should award ministerial status to individuals that hold the post of Parliament’s opposition leader, and give better recognition to all opposition leaders in state legislative assemblies, including extra allowances, a DAP federal lawmaker said today.

Taiping MP Nga Kor Ming said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak should prove that Malaysia practices a matured democracy, by giving proper recognition to the opposition.

“There are two impact, how much the ministers receive, the opposition leader shall be given equal treatment.

“Number two is the institution, my point is I’m not referring to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, regardless of who he is, it is the institution itself, Opposition leader’s office must be equipped  with ample resources, sufficient staff, so that they can play an effective role in providing check and balances for the government,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.
