PUTRAJAYA, Oct 21 — The issue of Automated Enforcement System (AES) traffic summons paid before September 18 will be discussed at the Cabinet meeting next week.

Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said the ministry is studying several options including returning half the amount paid by offenders.

“We have studied the consequences. If we want to reduce the rate, by how much and for which period. What about those who paid earlier

“The people do not realise how difficult it can be as it involves several ministries,” he said after meeting with the AES Implementation Steering Committee, here today.

Also present were Director-General of Road Transport Department, Datuk Ismail Ahmad and Deputy Inspector General of Police, Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin.

Hishammuddin had announced that the committee agreed to reduce the compound rate to a minimum RM150 starting September 18.

The rate depends on the period of payment of summons and the speed limit recorded by motorists with the maximum fixed at RM300.

The minister declined to reveal the other options until decided by the Cabinet but believed they will result in a ‘win-win situation.’

He also said a complete report on the Genting Highlands horror crash which killed 37 people in August will only be revealed after all reports are received.

“We have received a report from the Malaysian Institute for Road Safety Research (Miros) and is awaiting for a report from the police and two other agencies.” — Bernama
