KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 12 — The outcome of the elections for the three Umno wings today will be announced in stages as soon as the results from the divisions come in as early as 7pm, Umno Election Committee deputy chairman Tan Sri Azmi Khalid said.

He told Bernama that committee chairman Tan Sri Tajol Rosli Ghazali would make the announcements as they are received into the wee hours of the morning.

He said the progress of the delegates’ meetings and the elections around the country, which started at 8am, were running smoothly. “Minor hiccups were promptly settled,” he said.

Azmi said divisions that did not have many delegates might have concluded their elections as early as 1pm while larger divisions such as those in Sabah were expected to wind up late.

The delegates’ meetings and election of Wanita Umno, Umno Youth and Puteri Umno started simultaneously this morning at the 191 divisions throughout the country except in Sarawak, where Umno has no presence.

About 230,000 delegates would be electing the leaders in their respective wings at divisional and national levels.

In the respective wings, 110,765 Wanita Umno, 70,000 Umno Youth and 50,000 Puteri Umno delegates will elect their leadership for 2013-16.

Ninety-four candidates are contesting in the Umno Youth national-level election and 7,125 at the divisional level.

In Wanita Umno, 51 candidates are contesting at the national level and 6,758 in the divisions. Puteri Umno has 35 candidates contesting at the national level and 4,955 in the divisions. — Bernama
