380,000 people screened under 'Ops Cantas' since Aug 17

MELAKA, Oct 5 — A total of 380,343 people were screened nationwide under the ongoing ‘Ops Cantas’ from the date of its implementation on Aug 17 and yesterday, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said they comprised 178,217 Malays, Chinese (77,104), Indians (73,505) and others (51,517).

“Of the total, the police detained 14,511 members of secret societies and gangsters,” he told reporters after attending a security briefing with community leaders here today.

Also present were Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Idris Haron and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim.

Ahmad Zahid said Selangor recorded the highest arrests at 6,191, followed by Johor (2,682) and Kuala Lumpur (1,185).

For Melaka alone, Ahmad Zahid said 2,600 individuals were screened and that those involved in crime would be charged in court. — Bernama
