Detainee dies in Hilir Perak lockup

IPOH, Sept 18 — A male detainee was found dead in the Hilir Perak District Police Headquarters yesterday evening.

Hassan Salip, 46, was found unconscious at 3.45pm by a policeman who was tasked with taking him to the Tapah Prison after he was found guilty in court for not having an identity card and drug abuse.

Perak deputy police chief Datuk A Paramasivam said a doctor from Teluk Intan Hospital (HTI), confirmed that the detainee had died.

“The detainee was one of 11 suspects who were detained in Hutan Melintang, Bagan Datoh for drug addiction and not having an identity card,” he told reporters after attending the monthly police gathering at the Police Contingent Headquarters, here today.

He said the detainee was from Sabak Bernam, Selangor and had been in the lockup since September 3.

He said the case had been classified as sudden death and the body had been taken to HTI for post-mortem today. He said police were investigating the cause of death. — Bernama
