KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 — Sabah made the right decision to join the Federation of Malaysia 50 years ago because the move has clearly resulted in significant benefits for the state, Kudat member of parliament Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said today.

In a statement here, he said: “After half a century Sabahans can evaluate for themselves that the state’s inclusion into Malaysia was not in vain. It has actually brought about significant growth and progress for them.”

Abdul Rahim, who is also Deputy Defence Minister, added that the quality of life in the state has clearly improved with free education and health services, better roads, airports, and electricity and water supply.

He compared Malaysia’s stability and development with other countries and regions, which became independent about the same time but were still caught in sectarian conflicts, wars and poverty.

“We must appreciate our achievements. Even those who refuse to acknowledge our success and try to deny it, should do so,” he said.  — Bernama
