KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 — A secondhand goods trader was jailed three years and six months after he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of kidnapping and confining a lawyer for a ransom of RM150,000 last year. 

Judge Datuk Mohd Azman Husin ordered Mohd Fahmy Mohd Daud, 39, to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest on Nov 23 2012.

Mohd Fahmy and four other individuals initially pleaded not guilty to kidnapping Jason Leong Wai Meng, 36, in front of a restaurant at Jalan Mutiara, Sentul, on May 12 2012, under Section 3 of the Kidnapping Act 1961 which is punishable by life imprisonment, upon conviction. 

 In today’s proceedings, Mohd Fahmy pleaded guilty to kidnapping with the intention of confining under Section 365 of the Penal Code offered by the prosecution which carries a sentence of up to seven years in prison.  

Judge Mohd Azman set November 18 to 20 for the trial of the other four accused.
