KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 — MCA deputy president Liow Tiong Lai and 13 other central committee members today called for an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) in an attempt to uphold the party’s resolution to refuse government positions.

They wanted the EGM held within seven days, Liow (picture) told the media at a press conference held at the MCA headquarters.

“One-third (14) of the central committee have signed to call for an EGM to uphold the resolution and reinforce the suspension of (MCA national organising secretary) Tee Siew Keong for breaching the resolution,” Liow said.

“This is in line with Article 32 of the party constitution.”

MCA on October 2, 2011, passed a resolution to turn down government posts in the event the party performed badly in the impending general election.

President Dr Chua Soi Lek reaffirmed the resolution on May 6 this year after MCS's dismal showing in the May 5 election. The presidential council endorsed the resolution five days later.

Tee on May 14 accepted a position on the Johor exco at the request of the Sultan of Johor. He was suspended from the party for three years on June 20 for going against the resolution. However, the suspension was lifted on Thursday.

Yesterday Liow accused party Chua of being party to the MCA being inconsistent in upholding its resolution.

The 13 other members of the central committee who joined Liow in calling for the EGM are Chor Chee Heung, Wee Ka Siong, Yu Chok Tow, Hou Kok Chung, Wee Jeck Seng, Toh Chin Yaw, Ong Ka Chuan, Lee Wei Kiat, Hoh Khai Mun, Tan Cheng Liang, Paul Kong Sing Chu, Wyman Yoo Wei How and Chuah Poh Kiang.
