KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 — As Malaysia prepares to celebrate its 56th Merdeka anniversary, the people are becoming increasingly frustrated by the frequent water supply interruptions which they say should not be happening in “this day and age”.
In addition to Kuala Lumpur, the areas in the Klang Valley affected by the water cuts include Petaling, Subang and Gombak.
The latest disruption took place in Subang on Wednesday, taking many residents and businesses by surprise.
Subang Jaya assemblyman and state speaker Hannah Yeoh yesterday expressed frustration and irritation when dealing with Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) in trying to resolve the matter.
“They told me that water disruptions often happen because water supply is low but demand is high. I find it hard to accept such an explanation,” she said.
Yeoh said Syabas must foresee such inconveniences and notify the affected areas instead of cutting supply without notice.
“These interruptions happen very often ... every month, all without prior notice,” she said.
“A company that holds the monopoly in the water distribution service needs to be competent to handle such inconveniences. They can’t even inform us of their schedule for water trucks or when the water supply will resume.”
According to Syabas, the water supply interruptions were caused by a critical decrease in the water levels at the Bukit Dengkil and Subang Airport reservoirs.
Syabas officials are still investigating the cause of the drop in water levels at the reservoirs and cannot provide a specific date to when they will stabilise.
The company is also monitoring the affected areas and assisting the residents by sending water trucks and setting up water tanks.
