KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 — The Election Court today struck out a petition filed by the DAP to nullify the result of the 13th general election for the Cameron Highlands parliamentary seat now held by MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel (picture).

Justice Datuk Umi Kalthum Abdul Majid ruled that the petition filed by DAP election candidate M. Manogaran was defective as the petitioner had not pleaded sufficient facts to disclose cause of action and had not shown how bribery had so extensively prevailed to affect the electoral result.

She ordered Manogaran to pay RM40,000 in costs to Palanivel, the respondent in the case.

Palanivel, the natural resources and environment minister, won the seat with a 462-vote majority in a five-cornered contest that also involved Manogaran, Mohd Shokri Mahmood of Berjasa and independent candidates Kisho Kumar Kathirveloo and Alagu Thangarajoo. — Bernama
