KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — The new series of vehicle registration plates beginning with “W1A” is expected to be introduced in the third week of next month.

Kuala Lumpur Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Mohd Nadzri Osman said the current series is “WYU”, and the last series beginning with “WYY” would be issued in the first week of September.

Once this series is taken up, the next series will be ‘W1A’ to ‘W9999A’. The series ends with ‘WY1Y’ to ‘WY9999Y’ and will be followed by ‘WAA1A’ to ‘WAA9999A’.

“There are a high number of bidders for the ‘WYY’ and ‘W1A’ series,” Mohd Nazri said.

“The bidding for the ‘WYY’ series ended last Wednesday and bidding for the ‘W1A’ series will end on Monday.

“There were around 1,400 applicants for the ‘WYY’ series and more than 5,000 for the ‘W1A’ series so far.”

He said there were three types of numbers up for bidding — popular numbers, fancy numbers and golden numbers.

The popular numbers are four-digit numbers, fancy number are two-digit numbers, and golden numbers are single-digit numbers.

“The bidding price for the popular numbers starts from RM300, fancy numbers from RM2,000 and golden numbers from RM10,000,” he said.

Mohd Nadzri also said there were no plans to change the road tax stickers despite complaints from the public that they were difficult to remove.

“We cannot change it. We have a good reason for that. Previously there were a lot of cases of road tax stickers being stolen and misused,” he said.

“That is why we make it difficult to remove.”
