GEORGE TOWN, Aug 2 — The DAP will sue the News Straits Times (NST) for publishing misleading reports on its party elections, said party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
Lim said the party had initially ignored the misleading reports that 753 DAP members had complained of being denied the right to attend the party’s congress as delegates where the central executive committee (CEC) election was held last year.
“The Registrar of Societies (RoS) appeared to give credence to these reports by NST and other Barisan Nasional (BN)-controlled newspapers with its decision to ask DAP to hold a re-election of the CEC without giving any reasons,” he told a press conference at his office today.
The Penang chief minister said the DAP had no choice but to take legal action against NST so that the truth will be revealed.
“All this while they have been reporting these lies and we have ignored it because it was so ridiculous but now RoS appeared to believe their lies so we have to take action,” he said.
On Tuesday, the RoS issued a letter to the DAP ordering it to hold a re-election of its CEC.
Last year, the party leadership admitted to a technical glitch at the party election where the positions of Vincent Wu and Zairil Khir Johari were switched.
Today, the DAP sent a letter to the RoS demanding for an explanation for its decision to order the party to hold a re-election.
“It is not true that a total 753 members were not informed or were not allowed to attend the congress as delegates as claimed by NST’s reports,” Lim said.
He admitted that there some complaints by some of the delegates but not 753 of them.
“There is no such thing so we will sue NST and all newspapers that report these lies,” he said.
For now, the party will await a reply from the RoS to its letter before making any further decision on this issue.
