KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 — British chess grandmaster Nigel Short played a blitz game against the Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah on Thursday at the FIDE World Amateur Chess Championship in Kuala Lumpur, with the match ending in a draw.
Short shared the encounter on his Facebook page, noting that the Crown Prince “fittingly played the King’s Gambit.”
“He played pretty well, actually, but I was able to hold His Royal Highness to a draw,” Short wrote in the post.
Tengku Amir Shah officially opened the FIDE World Amateur Chess Championships 2026 at the KSL Esplanade Hotel in Klang on November 5.
Short, 61, is an English grandmaster who earned the title at age 19 and was ranked third in the world by FIDE from 1988 to 1989.
In 1993, he became the first English player to contest a World Chess Championship match, facing Garry Kasparov in London.
The FIDE World Amateur Chess Championships 2026 runs from November 4 to 13 in Klang, featuring around 600 players from 55 countries.
