KOTA KINABALU, Oct 31— Crowds began gathering at Padang Merdeka here as early as 5.30am today, eager to join celebrity Bella Astillah and Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman in celebrating their marriage at a Kenduri Rakyat.

The reception drew more than 20,000 people, turning the field in the heart of the city into a sea of well-wishers celebrating the newlyweds.

Adding colour to the wedding festivities were guests dressed in traditional attire representing various ethnic communities, reflecting Sabah’s rich cultural diversity and harmony.

Among the traditional outfits that caught the eye were those of the Bajau Semporna, Bajau Sama, Kadazan, Dusun Tindal, Dusun Kujau, Murut, Bugis, Bidayuh and Lundayeh communities, each showcasing its distinctive cultural heritage.

The vibrant colours, intricate patterns and distinctive designs added to the festive atmosphere, turning Padang Merdeka into a colourful showcase of Sabah’s cultural heritage.

For guest Cynthia D Baga, the Kenduri Rakyat was special not only because of the large turnout but also because it provided an opportunity to showcase Sabah’s rich cultural heritage through traditional attire.

“This is what makes Sabah unique,” she told Bernama.

Another guest, Esther Glorie Leow, described the wedding reception as a special occasion that brought together people of all ages and backgrounds to celebrate the newlyweds.

“It’s really wonderful to see so many people coming together to celebrate this special occasion. What makes it even more meaningful is seeing everyone proudly wearing their traditional costumes, showcasing the beautiful diversity of cultures we have here in Sabah,” she said.
