KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — Malaysia’s emerging sushi chefs will take centre stage later this year with the launch of the inaugural Pop Wasabi Awards 2026, a new competition aimed at recognising young culinary talent while promoting authentic Japanese cuisine.
The competition will culminate in a grand finale in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 22, where six chefs representing Japanese restaurants from across the country will compete in a series of sushi-making challenges judged on precision, technical skill and creativity.
Organised by seafood importer and distributor Sendo Ichi Seafoods Sdn Bhd, the awards are intended to become an annual platform celebrating excellence in Japanese gastronomy while nurturing the next generation of sushi chefs in Malaysia.
Sendo Ichi Seafoods chief operating officer Aldred Yaw said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to supporting culinary talent and raising appreciation for authentic Japanese cuisine.
“As a dedicated importer and distributor, we source and air-freight premium seafood from across Japan, working closely with suppliers at Tokyo’s Toyosu Fish Market to ensure our customers receive the highest-quality seafood,” he said in a statement.
The judging panel will be led by sushi master Sam Saito of Sushi Hibiki, who serves as a Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassador appointed by Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Additional judges will be announced ahead of the competition.
Yaw co-founded the Pop Wasabi Awards with veteran fashion designer Gillian Hung.
The organisers said the competition is expected to become an annual event that strengthens ties between Malaysian chefs and Japan’s culinary heritage while providing a platform for promising young sushi chefs to showcase their skills.
The Pop Wasabi Awards 2026 Grand Finale will be held in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 22.
