KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 — Canine welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) is continuing its sponsorship programme to subsidise treatment cost as it continues to get stray dogs that need medical attention.
MDDB adoption coordinator Christine Lai said MDDB had rescued eight seriously injured dogs that were knocked down by vehicles this year alone.
"Sometimes, we have to remove them from certain premises as the owners want the dogs out of there,” she said.
Among the heart wrenching rescue by MDDB recently was a female dog, now named Lucky, which was found with a seriously injured front limb at an institution of higher learning in Puncak Alam, Selangor.
"One of its limbs was only left with the bone that is jutting out,” she said, adding that a volunteer managed to rescue Lucky and sent her to a veterinary clinic for further treatment.
Due to her medical condition, Lucky would either be released at MDDB sanctuary in Rawang or their half-way home in Puchong upon her discharge from the clinic.
Similarly, the sponsorship programme will help to alleviate MDDB’s other operating costs due to the increasing dog population.
Under the sponsorship programme, members of the public can be guardians of any dog or dogs of their choice without having to bring them home.
"A sponsor can pay to take care of any number of dogs as they wish and each dog can have several sponsors at one time.”
"It is RM100 a month for able-bodied dogs and RM150 a month for disabled and special needs dogs,” said Lai, adding that MDDB now has about 80 disabled and special needs dogs under its care.
Lai said those who want to choose a dog to sponsor can select one from the albums MDDB has prepared with photos and biodata of each dog.
Given the urgency to seek support for the dogs, MDDB will be organising its sponsorship programme at the Mini Pet Fair at Amcorp Mall, Petaling Jaya, tomorrow and on Sunday from 10am to 6pm.
"We will also be having an adoption drive at the venue,” Lai said, adding that MDDB also has many puppies for adoption.
The event will take place at the main entrance’s canopy area.
Lai hoped members of the public would turn up in full force to support MDDB’s sponsorship programme and adoption drive.
"We will also be bringing some of our disabled dogs for an outing at the event as they love attention,” she said.
