KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 17 — A quiet evening was interrupted by Argentinian football fans as an elderly woman was mistakenly identified as Lionel Messi’s grandmother.
In a TikTok video that has gone viral, fans gathered outside her home in Rosario, Argentina. They were waving national flags and singing World Cup anthems on Tuesday night (Dec 13) to celebrate Argentina’s 3-0 win against Croatia in the semi-finals.
The 79-year-old, known as ‘Olga’, was not related to Messi as both of his real grandmothers have passed away.
However, she was pleased with the festivities, despite the raucousness.
"I am proud of Argentina's victory. Everything was so nice, I did not expect it,” she told The Sun.
"When I came to sit down again they sang 'Grandma come back, Grandma come back’ I felt so loved, so happy.”
Messi has credited his grandmother, Celia Oliveira Cuccittini, as the person who encouraged him to play football from a young age.
The football star shared with talkSPORT that his signature celebration — ‘pointing to the sky’ — is a dedication of all his goals to his late grandmother.
"She took to me to football, but now she can’t see how far I have come. Nevertheless, she continues to help me and my family,” Messi said.
Argentina will face off against France in the World Cup final tomorrow night at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar.
