KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 — Star Wars fans in Benicia, California may have been looking for ‘Darth Baker’ after coming across ‘Pan Solo’ located at a bakery here.

They however can thank the mother-daughter duo of Catherine and Hannalee Pervan, co-owners of One House Bakery, a family-owned and operated bakery that opened almost four years ago.

Fans of the sci-fi franchise made the unique sculpture an entry to the Downtown Benicia annual Main Street Scarecrow Contest, a 14-day long event where local businesses showcase handmade Halloween-themed creations.

The 6-foot-tall Pan Solo is a life-size recreation of the character of Han Solo frozen in carbonite by Darth Vader in Star Wars: Episode V- The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Episode VI-Return of the Jedi.

Times-Herald reported that the planning for the sculpture alone took over three months, followed by a full month of after-hours work in the kitchen to bring the sculpture to life by the mother-daughter team who painstakingly recreated the character.

This isn’t the first time the Pervans have delighted Star Wars fans.

In 2020, the had introduced the ‘Pain-dough-lorian’ and ‘Baby Dough-Da’ made out of bread and ‘the Pandroid’ made of pans and kitchen tools, inspired by the television series The Mandalorian.

They took a ‘break’ last year, with ‘Dough-ki’, a menacing alligator made of bread, with sharp teeth and curved horns, modelled after ‘Alligator Loki’, a creature on the Marvel series Loki before returning to the Star Wars theme.

The duo had initially thought about baking Audrey II, the blood-thirsty plant from Little Shop of Horrors, but worried it wouldn’t fit in the oven, so they settled on Solo.

Pan Solo is one of 28 creations entered in the contest this year where the favourite will be voted by the public.
