NEW YORK, May 31 — Fancy a hot dog? Austrian artist Erwin Wurm is bringing his mobile artwork "Hot Dog Bus” to New York this summer, with plans to drive around the Brooklyn waterfront serving up actual hot dogs to passers-by.

The artist modified a vintage Volkswagen Minibus to create the surreal, mobile artwork, which invites public participation in the form of a bright-yellow, overstuffed food truck.

The "Hot Dog Bus” is in fact the US premiere of Wurm's artwork "Curry Bus," which he debuted in Germany in 2015, serving currywurst outside the Museum of Wolfsburg. This reimagined iteration is intended to highlight the gastronomic connection between New York's iconic street food and his homeland of Austria.

Wurm will unveil the "Hot Dog Bus” at Brooklyn Bridge Park on June 9. Through August 26, find it at Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pier 1 on Saturdays and Pier 5 on Sundays from 12-6pm.

Wurm's exhibition is being presented by the Public Art Fund, whose summer programme includes another transformation of an iconic vessel, this one travelling by sea. 

For "Flow Separation,” artist Tauba Auerbach has painted a 1930s New York fireboat in the tradition of "dazzle” camouflage, a technique used during World War I to confuse enemy ships. Every surface of the boat will be covered with "optically vibrating" designs, the results of the artist's research into fluid and smoke dynamics.

The boat was co-commissioned with 14-18 NOW, the UK's arts program for the First World War centenary, which has presented four dazzled ships around the UK.

"Flow Separation” debuts July 1. Throughout the summer and fall, it will be docked at various locations around New York Harbor, offering passengers free trips on New York's waterways. — AFP-Relaxnews
