SINGAPORE, Dec 16 — Get ready, party animals.
Zouk is set to welcome its first partygoers at its new premises at Clarke Quay’s Cannery Block tomorrow, after 25 years at Jiak Kim Street, and the club is confident its new space will prove to be a "visual escapade” that will provide revellers with "an out-of-this-world audio visual experience”.
The iconic club’s new space spans two floors, features a new statement light structure that is programmed with "countless” lighting patterns, a new DJ stage, LED lights, five concept bars, as well as furniture with compartments for bag storage.
It has a capacity for about 2,000 people — similar to the old Zouk at Jiak Kim.
"The futuristic and industrial design language is now much more in line with various dance music we play,” said Sofie Chandra, consumer marketing and PR director for Zouk Singapore. "With the previous space, there were always limitations with how much we can switch things up, but a new space really allowed us to take things further.”
The new Zouk is also designed to be more flexible in catering to the needs of resident DJs, guest talent, as well as special events. In particular, the Zouk and Phuture spaces can be converted into one huge "Superclub” space, offering an 898 square metre space in total with ground and second floors connected with direct sight lines to the DJ.
"Constant in this exploration and development was the desire to create a new space that would be perceived as an evolution and not a replication of "old Zouk”,” said Phillips Connor, the founder of Independent Consultants and the architect and designer for Zouk.
"Though, of course, we respect the origins and iconic status of the Zouk brand within our unique Singapore culture, we all felt the need to do a little "rule breaking” and articulate something with a contemporary edge. This falls in line with Zouk’s pioneering approach to not just appeal to current market tastes, but to groom the young and less knowledgeable with greater and greater nuance into authentic music, art and design.”
The club also retains its signature Zouk and Phuture dance stages, but does not include Velvet Underground, which was targeted at a more mature crowd. Explaining the decision to axe Velvet Underground, Chandra said the club felt the outlet had "lost a bit of its identity” in the last two years.
"When we brainstormed and talked about moving to the new space and how we wanted different concepts, we felt that creating a new concept would be ideal to target a different segment of the market,” Chandra said.
She added that Zouk plans to open a fourth outlet next year in addition to the recently launched restaurant and bar Red Tail, which is also at Clarke Quay. "That is why Velvet was not included in the new space.”
Zouk At Clarke Quay is located at 3C River Valley Road, The Cannery, Singapore 179022. It’s open from 9pm to 4am on Saturdays, 9pm to 3am on Wednesdays, 9pm to 2am (Phuture only) on Thursdays, and 9pm to 3am on Fridays. For more information, visit www.zoukclub.com — TODAY
